| There are countless numbers of factors that influence how a weave looks and feels. The Aspect ratio (AR) and metal used are the most influential, but only two of many variables. Everyone has their own style and tendencies. This page is intended as a general guide only, for exactly these reasons. My style may differ from yours enough that the following suggestions won't work for you. Chances are they will be pretty close, but you never know.... I have very specific tendencies when I weave that may cause problems if not taken into consideration: If a choice must be made between stability and flexibility, I usually go with stability. For example, as the AR of Full Persian 6:1 increases it becomes more flexible, but it also tends to flatten out, losing its characteristic round shape. I rely heavily on AR and use calipers religiously. I use a lot of mandrels, in increments as small as 1/128th's. I realize that many maillers don't need or want increments this small, so some of my suggestions are impractical. That shouldn't be reason not to try if you really want to though. Experiment. Wrap electrical tape around your mandrels, use different cutting methods, etc... If what you try doesn't work, it doesn't work - but you may learn something new during the process. Generally I include the actual ID as well as mandrel size, but there are exceptions (mainly from before I started using calipers) I generally saw-cut my rings, primarily using 8/0, 6/0, and 4/0 size blades. Not a big deal when you're talking [14g 1/2"] rings, but when it's 24g 5/64" it does make a difference. |
